The anterior approach to hip replacement is a minimally invasive approach to replacing the hip joint and takes place through the front of the hip joint with an incision on the upper thigh instead of the traditional approach, which has a larger incision on the side of the hip. With the anterior approach the surgeon is usually able to separate the muscles versus cutting through them. While this approach may not ideal for every patient, it is a great option for the right patient, as it allows for a smaller incision, often a quicker recovery and less pain. Using the Mako SmartRobotics technology, the surgeon is able to pre-plan your joint replacement by getting a CT Scan prior to your surgery to create a 3D computer model of your joint. Doing this allows the surgeon to precisely determine the size of the implant they will use, the angle of placement and create a customized plan that determines the exact fit of the joint implant to you. Surgeons who use this method, often feel that the patient has a better fit of the new joint and ultimately that will lead to less wear and tear on the new joint as they age. The surgeon does the surgery and uses a robotic arm to guide the cutting and shaving of the bone in the exact manner that was planned on the 3D computer model.
